Hope the tips help, topwater fishing in my opinion is some of the most fun available in the game. I'm one of the people experiencing the crazy physics bugs currently, so this could be a problem that might not affect you personally. I'm not sure if this is intentional on the devs part, or if it's bug related. Also, in the last couple of weeks, I've noticed it's a lot harder, and maybe even impossible now for a fish to be hooked through the lilies (frog). Watch for the fish, when he is close to the lure, do not pull back on rod until you see tension, then set the hook.

Keep your line as tight as possible while maintaining popping or walking technique, if fish strikes while line is slack, it will almost certainly cause a miss or failed hook set. First of all, pay attention to your line and hook and don't worry about technique gauge, I recommend bumping up graphics setting on PC as it may improve your chances of seeing a fish go after your lure. There are some tips that I think will improve your hook set success rate. I believe this is how the devs intend for topwater lures to work.

Topwater lures have a high fish attraction rate and therefore a high strike miss rate to compensate.
